Failing The Female: Behind the 15m 30s Conversation
Failing The Female is a hybrid documentary/performance by a group of young women that coexist and release stories about their personal relationships with womanhood. They share overlapping experiences of a sense of failure in their roles as women, supporting and comforting each other in a range of ways.
“I am weary of women, I don’t trust them.” I started drifting from them in my life, soon they were basically strangers. “I find it hard to build strong connections with other women. I have never experienced it or been able to feel vulnerable with them.” Why does it feel like we are competing? “I was trained to be against women, I could not identify with them” Am I the only one? “I had to teach myself how to be a woman.” A uniform so tight, it cut off my circulation. “I often sabotage my own womanhood,” and “I always feel more like a girl than a woman anyway.” Should I be more nurturing? “I grew up in a female strong household and hated it.” “How to be intimate?” Yes, “I am afraid to be seen as less of a woman than the rest.”
Why is it so easy to believe we are failing the female? For each of our overlapping stories, about being sandwiched in a femininity that is reduced to solely “my body, my makeup, and my clothes,” we pour tea into each other’s cups. In these times of comfort, our simple acts of helping clasp a bracelet, reassuring a haircut, and even sharing a cigarette serve as a means to challenge our fears of rejection and become reflections among us.
